Where We Lived

Where We Lived: Discovering The Places We Once Called Home (The Taunton Press, 2006) is like a trip down memory lane of the collective U.S. conscience. The book, by historian Jack Larkin, examines early American homes and buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, in communities from the East, South and Midwest, tracing settlement patterns, development of architectural styles and societal shifts. A visual bonus — the book is illustrated with 1930s-era photography culled from the Historic American Buildings Survey. www.taunton.com.

During a trip to Paris, Stephanie Odegard became smitten with Soie de Lune's sumptuous silk scarves. A partnership ensued between Odegard, founder of the well-known rug and furnishings brand, and the silk company's founder, Anou Thammavong, resulting in the Soie de Lune for Odegard collection of woven silk interiors textiles. Inspired by traditional Laotian patterns, Orchid, Monsoon and Ginger are made with Chinese filature threads and complex vegetal dyes and woven by hand. The silks come in standard bolts 42 inches wide and 16 yards long, but they can be woven to custom specifications. www.odegardinc.com.
