January/February 2007

Welcome

Nora Burba TrulssonWe love design competitions and awards ceremonies. It's rewarding to watch design professionals who've poured heart and soul into their projects walk up to the podium to be recognized for all that hard work.

That's why you'll always see the winners of a design competition or two featured on the pages of Sources+Design. We might not get around to every competition every year, but we try to "tour" our Southwest and Rocky Mountain region to see who's winning what.

With that in mind, we're happy to showcase the winners of the recent AIA Western Mountain Region design competition, which include a revamped 1956 hotel, a museum, a church and a car dealership, not to mention several residences. We've also cherry-picked several 2006 ASID chapter design competitions to bring you what we're calling"Stars of ASID," three award-winning residences designed by interior designers who are no strangers to the winner's podium.

This issue also marks the debut of our new "Green Scene" column, written by our Las Vegas contributor, Phil Hagen. The column will explore green design and sustainability issues in our unique region, where water, sun and fragile ecosystems are key elements. In this inaugural column, Phil takes a look at The Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, where visitors can learn how to build—and live—green in the desert.

We're also touring a remote-but-worth-it design source, the Nizhoni Ranch Gallery in Sonoita, Arizona, where trader Steve Getzwiller showcases his fabulous Navajo weavings that he travels thousands of miles each year to track down. For something a little closer to urban comforts, take a look at the recent expansion and additions to John Brooks, Inc.'s Scottsdale showroom.

Speaking of green, our next issue will cover topics in the realm of landscapes, from planning to design, and even outdoor furnishings. If you're up in snowy country, the March/April issue will be the equivalent of getting out the seed catalogues in the dead of winter and daydreaming of blossoms to come.

Finally, the new year always brings change, so please note our new address:
