Bricks and Stones

Arizona's Award-Winning Masonry Projects

BY DEBORAH PADDISON

On a cool evening last fall, Arizona architects, engineers and contractors gathered at the Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center to celebrate the winners of the 15th annual Excellence In Masonry Architectural Awards, presented by the Arizona Masonry Guild. The program honored 11 projects for outstanding masonry design, workmanship and creativity with brick, block or stone.

The winning projects, which include several residences, a church, a fire station and a restaurant, were judged by a panel of jurors from Las Vegas, Nevada:

  • Chairman: Edward A. Vance, AIA , former president of JMA Architecture Studios
  • Barrett Powley, AIA , LEED-AP, JMA Architecture Studios
  • George Marnell, president and CEO, Marnell Masonry
  • W. Rick Sellers, AIA , principal/vice president, Carpenter Sellers Associates

Besides encouraging design creativity, the nonprofit Arizona Masonry Guild plays a significant role in new-product design and construction standards, as well as enhanced safety policies and increased energy efficiency of masonry products.

Here are the 11 winning projects and the firms that contributed to their success. (All cities are in Arizona unless otherwise noted.)
