Wallcovering

As any design professional knows, it's all about the backgrounds when it comes to good interiors. As such, how you do the walls is critical to achieve the right look for, say, a residence, a restaurant or a large office. Here are some new products to think about when you're specifying your next interior.

Surfaces by David Bonk features a collection of handpainted and black-and-white wallcoverings that can be used to create subtle backgrounds or bold, contemporary statements. Bart Halpern's Liquid Kyoto Pleat imparts a glamorous, luxurious look to residential and commercial interiors. It's part of a metallic collection of wallcoverings that is available in 17 pleated textures and 30 colors, such as the copper color shown here installed at the Wynn Las Vegas casino. Madrid, Inc.'s Wall Weave adds texture, warmth and interest to wall or ceiling planes via its pattern of woven oak, maple or cherry strips. The material, which is made of seamless, interlocking wood squares, can be adhered to surfaces by nailing, gluing or using drywall screws, and is shipped 10 square feet per box. Maya Romanoff has introduced six new surface materials inspired by everything from hammered copper to reptile skins. The True Metals collection, pictured here, includes hand-worked 12-by-12-inch tiles in copper, brass and aluminum. Bedazzled Light, available in 12 luminescent colors, is made with small, lightweight glass beads. Aphrodite, which comes in natural as well as handpainted colors, is made with a veneer of layered, round capiz shells. Three vinyl lines, Luxe Lizard, Pearly Greats and It's A Cinch, round out the new introductions. Aluminum chains might not spring to mind immediately as a wallcovering, but Repp's Daisycake.com's 100 percent aluminum chains, hung vertically from a stylishly slim rail, can bathe a wall in texture, subtle motion and reflected light, as shown here in the 210 North nightclub in Reno, Nevada. The chains, imported from Spain, can be used against a wall, or to create a backdrop, fluid wall, partition or enclosure in a commercial or residential space. Hartmann & Forbes' Naples collection of wallcoverings was inspired by woven palms found on the island of Capri. Made with highly textured natural vegetable and pulp fibers, the wallcoverings are available as cut yardage in up to 30 continuous yards and can be fire treated. Lonseal, best known for its resilient flooring, has launched a vertical surfacing collection. The collection features eight Lonseal products—Lonpoint in red and black, Lonpearl in Caspian Mist and Marlin Silver, Lonbead in Pearl, and Lonwood Natural in Maple Syrup, Nutshell and Quail Egg—in thinner, more flexible sheets that are pliable and adhere with ease to wall and ceiling surfaces.
