Taking Pride

IIDA Southwest Chapter 2007 Design Excellence Awards

BY DEBORAH PADDISON

They say pride goes before a fall, but pride isn't always a sin—particularly when you're talking about the PRIDE Awards, presented by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Southwest Chapter to honor design excellence.

At a ceremony held in the spring on the rooftop at the Hotel Valley Ho in downtown Scottsdale, Arizona, IIDA Southwest Chapter presented Awards for Design Excellence and Awards of Merit in a variety of categories to design firms in the chapter's service area of Arizona, New Mexico and Las Vegas, Nevada. Entries are judges on originality and innovation of design in response to the project's challenges.

After all, it's important now and then to take time out to recognize the quality of your work and to celebrate the accomplishments of others. Here's a look at the winning projects.

Best of Show
Design Excellence, Public Facility

Check it out… Richard + Bauer Architecture, LLC, of Phoenix, Arizona, garnered the top award, Best in Show, as well as the Award for Design Excellence in the Public Facility category, for the Cesar Chavez Branch Library, a regional branch library serving the metro Phoenix communities of Laveen and South Mountain. The 25,000-square-foot facility, which opened in January, takes its design inspiration from the picturesque surroundings of Cesar Chavez Park. Two curving wings narrow in the middle like an hourglass, echoing the curves of the nearby lake. This floorplan also provides an intuitive location for the central service desk. Window walls on the north and south capture reflected light and bring the exterior park-like setting inside. Furniture, color and materials selections are reminiscent of picnic tables, gingham blankets and outdoor lighting. Team members: Kelly Bauer, IIDA; Amber Davis, Yukiko Corella and Stacey Crumbaker.

New Residence

Krause Interiors in Phoenix took home the Award for Design Excellence in this category for a "small jewel" of a project called the West Residence. The unique and playful loft space is warm and worldly, with modern touches. Team members Brad Krause, Jill Gibney and Jennifer Consentino emphasized clean lines, exposed ceilings, simple natural materials and finishes, blending them with Asian and Italian influences. Exotic tachidamo wood from Japan was used throughout, accented by maple, stainless steel, cable lighting and artwork.

Environmental Design

Richard + Bauer Architecture, LLC, Phoenix, won an Award for Design Excellence in Environmental Design for the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building II at Arizona State University in Tempe. This engineering and research facility features a flexible, open design, with a centralized courtyard flanked by loft lab spaces. Partitions between labs are temporary and can be located anywhere along the building's length, maximizing flexibility and adaptability for meeting space requirements. The space enhances learning, collaboration and interaction outside of the lab environment. Team members: Kelly Bauer, IIDA; James Richard, AIA; Stephen Kennedy, AIA; Stacey Kranz, IIDA; and Andrew Timberg.

Commercial Office
Under 10,000 Square Feet

DFD Interior Architecture of Phoenix received the Award for Design Excellence in this category for the offices of the Equitable Real Estate Company at Raintree in Scottsdale. The design objective was to create a tranquil atmosphere for a very chaotic work environment. DFDia team members Michelle Romero, IIDA; Amy Nieboer, IIDA; and Nicola Possas accomplished this through the use of natural materials including a sandstone partition, a water-like glass feature at the reception area, bamboo flooring and a central core of offices that serpentine through the space like a stream.

Over 10,000 Square Feet

Dekker/Perich/Sabatini of Albuquerque, New Mexico, won the Award for Design Excellence in this category for the Jefferson Green office development at Journal Center in Albuquerque. Completed in September 2006, the project will be the first in New Mexico to achieve Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED program for its core and shell, and is expected to use 40 percent less energy and 30 percent less water than a traditional office building in Albuquerque. Sustainable design features include a high-performance glazing system in a curtain wall of 60 percent recycled aluminum, shade canopies to control glare and heat gain, operable windows, low-VOC materials and under-floor air distribution. More than 90 percent of the structural steel is recycled, and responsible construction practices diverted more than 4,000 tons of material from the landfill. (For more on this project, see this issue's "Going Green" feature.)

Institutional + Educational

The Orcutt/Winslow Partnership of Phoenix won the Award of Design Excellence for their comfortable, holistic design of the Reproductive Medical Institute Complex at the Arizona State University (ASU) Research Park in Tempe. Appropriately for this project, where couples seek treatment for infertility, the design unites science—reflected through the architecture's rigid, modern lines—and the human touch, echoed through natural materials such as cast-in-place concrete walls with exposed metal tie-rods, warm espresso and zebrawood reception desks, water features and fountains, exposed aggregate flooring, bamboo paneling and tone-on-tone carpet tiles. The 37,000-square-foot facility sits in a pastoral, park-like setting with three lakes, walking trails and a picnic pavilion. Team members: Amy Garcia, Rob Lohmeier and Tom Pistorius, AIA.
