Doors + Windows
Doors and windows are critical in establishing a building's architectural style. Choose the right product and your design statement will be amplified — and that's not even factoring the energy savings that most doors and windows come equipped with these days. Here are some new styles to review.
Garofoli, an italian manufacturer of contemporary interior doors, introduces its new tempered Magic glass doors, available in a variety of patterns, colors and styles. It's shown here in three-dimensional brown and satin waves, set in sliding doors, which utilize the linea sliding system of modified couplings and a polished steel bar. Available through Doors d'Italia, 837 15th St., Boulder, CO 80302; (720) 938-1786 or www.doorsditalia.com.
One of Sun Mountain Door's most requested wood species for its custom finished and distressed doors and mouldings is pin knot spanish cedar. The fragrant wood is a rich, reddish brown with small, tight knots, and it's resistant to insects and rot. It lends itself to rustic looks, ranging from mountain lodge to arts and crafts. 140 Commerce Drive, Berthoud, CO 80513; (970) 532-2105 or www.sunmountaindoor.com.
Mile High Trim Company's latest product isn't a new door or moulding style. Instead, it's a new Web site, revamped to be product-friendly for architects, interior designers, builders and trim carpenters. The Web site highlights nine of the firm's door manufacturers, with direct links to their Web sites, plus there's an online trim tool that shows products in actual size and provides dimensions. 601 S. Broadway, Suite G, Denver, CO 80209; (303) 777-7070 or www.milehightrimcompany.net.
Design-Lite Glass by Peachtree Doors and Windows uses advanced manufacturing technology to create cost-efficient decorative glass looks. The process applies a thin bead of acrylic, in silver, oil-rubbed bronze, gun metal or white to any window, patio door or entry door panel in one of three standard offerings. www.peachtreedoor.com.
Sometimes, an interior door just needs to disappear. That's why Garofoli also created the Filomuro flush door, designed to be a service door concealing hallways or rooms, keeping intact the plane of a wall. Shown here painted gray to match the surrounding wall, it's also available in solid and lacquered wood as well as glass. Available through Doors d'Italia, 837 15th St., Boulder, CO 80302; (720) 938-1786 or www.doorsditalia.com.
Mare Nostrum, with a newly opened showroom in Scottsdale, Arizona, employs the talents of Spanish and Italian artisans to create custom designed doors and architectural elements. Wood choices include traditionally used species plus reclaimed antique walnut, chestnut and mahogany. Custom hardware is forged in Andalusia, Spain and Umbria, Italy. 16033 N. 77th St., Suite 2A, Scottsdale, AZ 85260; (480) 467 2426 or www.marenostrumdesign.com.

WeatherShield has expanded its Spanish colonial collection to include a Dutch entrance door. The door's plank-style panel splits in two, allowing homeowners to open the top half to views and fresh air, independently of the bottom — a good idea for homes with young children or pets. The bottom half of the panel is topped with a 10-inch-deep shelf, accessible when the top is open. It also features an advanced sill that only engages when the door is closed, eliminating drag and allowing the door to open and close easily, while tightly sealing the bottom of the door when shut. It's available in flat, beaded and raised-panel styles, several widths and heights, and numerous wood choices, including American fir, incense cedar, alder and mahogany. www.weathershield.com.

Kolbe has added universal design options to its wood window and door offerings. Included in the options are motorized operators to make casement windows easier to use and aluminum sill ramps for sliding doors, making for a smooth transition between indoors and out. Interior and exterior swinging doors are available in wide sizes to accommodate passage by people with mobility aids and, shown here, can be fitted with lever handles that are easier to operate than knobs or latch handles. www.kolbe-kolbe.com.
