Phoenix, Arizona–based Floor Associates, Inc. has received a 2008 national ASLA Honor Award in the general design category for Lost Dog Wash Trailhead in Scottsdale, Arizona. The landscape architecture firm designed the grounds for the rammed-earth trailhead complex, located in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The off-the-grid project included parking, revegetation of native plants and rainwater harvesting. Other winners of national ASLA recognition include Pamela Burton & Company of Santa Monica, California and Marmol Radziner & Associates of Los Angeles, both of which received Honor Awards in the residential design category.

The Cesar Chavez Library in Laveen, Arizona, designed by Tucson, Arizona–based Line and Space, LLC, has been named one of the Top Ten Green Projects by the national AIA's Committee on the Environment. The building, part of the Phoenix Public Library system, features broad overhangs, a rainwater-harvesting system and berming.

Humphries Poli Architects of Denver, Colorado has received a Citation Award for its design of the City of Fort Collins, Colorado Police Services Facility from the national AIA's Academy of Architecture for Justice Knowledge Community. The project, which has received LEED Silver Certification, was envisioned as a new civic landmark and is designed around an open lobby and three-story central atrium.

Circle West Architects of Scottsdale, Arizona has received a national AIA Multifamily Housing Design Award for its design of The Duke, an urban-infill condominium project in downtown Scottsdale. Comprising eight units, the project was designed in accordance with Scottsdale's Green Building Program.

National AIA's Committee on Architecture for Education has recognized Orcutt/Winslow, a Phoenix architectural firm, with Awards of Merit for the design of three educational projects. Located in Phoenix, Bioscience High School incorporates solar orientation, exposed systems and fossil castings. In Orange, California, Santiago Canyon College Library utilizes simple building forms, elegant details and modest materials. Averett University Student Center in Danville, Virginia serves to transition the school from a regional college to a campus community through the use of flexible gathering spaces.

Bob Peterson of ABD, a Fort Collins, Colorado design/build company, has been named Remodeler of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders Remodelers. Peterson has been involved in the local, state and national levels of NAHB for more than 14 years and has served on the Certified Graduate Remodelers Board of Governors.

Denver's Coover-Clark & Associates has received two national awards for recent projects. The architectural firm was honored with an Air Force Design Honor Award for its work on the Army Aviation Support Facility at Colorado's Buckley Air Force Base. The base was recognized by the USAF design and construction awards program in the category of "Best Sustainable Facility." Coover-Clark & Associates also received a 2008 Job of the Year honor from the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association for its design of the Kansas City International Airport's Consolidated Rental Car and Customer Service Building. The terrazzo floor design incorporates traditional cement and marble chips along with recycled glass.

Pahl Architecture of Denver has received a Parking Structure Award of Excellence from the American Concrete Institute's Rocky Mountain Chapter for its design of the downtown Castle Rock, Colorado parking garage. The garage, which includes 374 spaces for county vehicles, county staff and the public, was designed to fit in with the historic character of Castle Rock through the use of a reproduction of native rhyolite stone, a traditional building material in the region.

In other Pahl Architecture news, the firm has recently begun construction on a fire station for Copper Mountain, Colorado. The 28,020-square-foot facility is being designed to include space for fire, cable, television, water, sanitation and administrative functions provided by the town.

The Phoenix-based architectural firm merzproject was recognized for its modern addition to a historic downtown Phoenix residence by AIA Arizona. The project was honored as one of AIA Arizona's Home of the Year winners in the category of new construction, remodels and additions.

In other merzproject news, the firm has recently completed work on The Victor, a condominium project in central Phoenix. Developed by Bruckal Redevelopments Group, the 37-unit complex was designed to meet LEED Silver Certification.

Phoenix architect Marlene Imirzian recently completed renovation design on the Sun Dee house, a 1927 four-plex in downtown Phoenix. Working with developer and contracting firm Desert Viking, which moved the historic structure to a new downtown location, Imirzian transformed the structure into a 4,235-square-foot luxury home that features traditional, vintage detailing. Also working on the project were interior designer Emmeline New of New Surroundings in Tempe, Arizona, and landscape architect Tom Morrison of Greenscape, Inc. of Gilbert, Arizona.

Langdon Wilson Architecture of Phoenix has completed two metro-area projects. The 53,450-square-foot Salvation Army Phoenix Citadel complex includes a 350-seat sanctuary, multipurpose banquet hall/gymnasium, kitchen, classrooms, childcare facilities and a computer center. The new 180,000-square-foot headquarters of Services Group of America includes a below-grade executive parking area and a separate parking structure.

SmithGroup Phoenix has broken ground on two projects and recently completed a third. The architectural firm saw construction start on Mesa Community College's Red Mountain Learning Center in Mesa, Arizona, a 42,000-square-foot center for the sciences and performing arts, and on Arizona State University's College of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation Phase II, an 84,000-square-foot, five-story facility in downtown Phoenix designed to be a hub and academic center for the college. SmithGroup also saw completion of a 10,000-square-foot emergency department addition for Banner Page Hospital in Page, Arizona.

In other SmithGroup Phoenix news, Mark Patterson, AIA, has been elected vice president. Patterson, who has 25 years of experience, heads the firm's healthcare studio. Additionally, Mark Adams, IIDA, has been hired as principal and interior architecture studio leader. Adams has more than 20 years of interiors experience and a portfolio that includes office, government, education and healthcare projects.

RNL's Phoenix office has relocated to a new, green location in central Phoenix. The 7,600-square-foot building has been designed for LEED certification and includes low-VOC paints, daylight sensors, recycled-content carpet and recycled denim insulation, and it utilizes green housekeeping products.

In other RNL news, the Denver office has added four new employees. Victor Kolouch, who has a master's from the University of Colorado at Denver, has been hired as senior project architect. Melissa Friedland and Josh Furman have joined the engineering studio as intern engineers. Interior designer Paula Dulin, a graduate of the University of Kansas, has joined the interiors studio.

Finnegan Erickson & Associates Consulting Engineers in Las Vegas, Nevada, has launched a lighting design department, FEA Illumination Design Studio. The new studio will be led by a team that includes principal Steven Pay, PE, LC, LEED AP; senior electrical engineer Stephen Hall, PE, LC, LEED AP; and senior lighting designer Steven Stannard, FIESNA. The firm specializes in hospitality work.

Nuszer Kopatz Urban Design Associates has opened three new regional offices, in Phoenix and in Steamboat and Fort Collins, Colorado. The Denver-based firm offers land planning, landscape architecture, architecture and community-visioning services.

The metro Phoenix office of Design Workshop has promoted three staff members as associates. Landscape architects Shawn Byron and Seung Kyum Kim as well as operations manager Sara Homuth were awarded the new positions. Design Workshop, a landscape architecture and land-planning firm, has offices throughout the United States, as well as internationally.

Russell J. Healey, PE, LEED AP, has joined Westlake Reed Leskosky in Phoenix as a mechanical engineering leader. Healey, a graduate of Drexel University, formerly headed his own engineering design firm in New Jersey. Westlake Reed Leskosky offers architectural, interior design and engineering services.

Helser Brothers, Inc., a Chandler, Arizona window hardware design and manufacturing firm, won two awards during the recent International Window Coverings Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia. The Window Covering Manufacturers Association honored the firm with a First Place Award in the category of best new concept for its Jewels product, created for Helser Brothers by Arizona interior designer Debra May Himes, ASID. Additionally, the firm was named the WOW! World of Windows Mover and Shaker of the Year, which honors a company that has made an influential contribution to the industry.
