AIA Arizona announced numerous 2008 Design Awards winners as well as other recognitions during a fall event at the Phoenix Art Museum. Topping the design competition were Honor Awards conferred on the City of Scottsdale Arabian Branch Library, designed by Richärd + Bauer Architecture, LLC of Phoenix; the TAXI mixed-use project in Denver, designed by Will Bruder + Partners, Phoenix; and Sun Devil Energy Center at Arizona State University in Tempe, designed by Gould Evans, LLC, Phoenix. The AIA Architect's Medal, recognizing an individual architect's community and professional achievements, went to Will Bruder, AIA; Jeremy Jones, AIA; James Richard, AIA; and Gordon Rogers, AIA. Ryden Architects, Inc. of Phoenix, a firm noted for its historic-preservation work, was named AIA Arizona 2008 Firm of the Year. Additional special recognition went to 180 Degrees of Phoenix, which was named AIA Arizona 2008 Contractor of the Year.

AIA Western Mountain Region has named Humphries Poli Architects of Denver, Colorado the 2008 Firm of the Year. The firm, which handles public safety, library, community center and commercial work, has previously been named AIA Colorado's and AIA Denver's Firm of the Year. Stephen Dynia Architects of Jackson, Wyoming has been named AIA Wyoming's 2008 Firm of the Year. The firm, which also won five design awards, is noted for its residential, multifamily and performing-arts projects.
The design of a pain-management clinic in Henderson, Nevada garnered Assemblage Studio of Las Vegas, Nevada an Honor Award from AIA Nevada's 2008 design competition. The firm was founded by principal Eric Strain, AIA.

The Arizona Masonry Guild recently announced its 2008 Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards during a banquet held in Scottsdale. The program honored 15 projects for outstanding masonry design, including the use of brick, block or stone. The top award, the Gold Trowel, was given to a Phoenix residence designed by Jones Studio, also of Phoenix. The masonry contractor on the project was Maldonado-Olson Masonry, Inc., the structural engineer was JT Engineering and the masonry supplier was Superlite Block, all of Phoenix. Ibarra Rosano Design Architects of Tucson, Arizona won five different design awards in 2008 for three residential projects in the Tucson area. A residential urban-infill project, called The Six, won the firm a Southern Arizona AIA Home of the Year Award, in addition to a Merit Award. A new residence received an AIA Arizona Citation Award, as well as a Citation Award from AIA Southern Arizona. The third residence, a renovation project, garnered Ibarra Rosano an AIA Southern Arizona Merit Award. The firm was founded in 1999 by Luis Ibarra and Teresa Rosano.

Gonzalez Goodale Architects of Pasadena, California recently won a Merit Award from AIA Pasadena & Foothill for its design of the new Arcadia, California fire station. The 21,000-square-foot facility houses the firefighting company and administrative offices.
Circle West Architects of Scottsdale recently won two Environmental Excellence Awards from the Phoenix-based Valley Forward organization. Winning projects were a desert house designed with sustainable materials and strategies, and The Duke, a downtown Scottsdale townhouse community designed in compliance with Scottsdale's residential Green Building Program.

Lehrer + Gangi Design + Build of Los Angeles, California has won two awards for its Water + Life Museums campus in Hemet, California. The 70,000-square-foot facility, which celebrates life-giving water in Southern California, was recognized with an American Architecture Award, organized by The Chicago Athenaeum, as well as a Savings By Design Energy Efficiency Integration Award, co-sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission and AIA California.

Edwards, Colorado–based Slifer Designs has completed its first LEED Gold–certified project, the Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Clubhouse in Jackson, Wyoming. The interiors project, done for Vail Resorts Development Corporation, includes features such as furniture made with Forest Stewardship Council–certified wood, waterless and low-flow plumbing, low-VOC paint and local materials.

Cottle Carr Yaw Architects of Basalt, Colorado has received LEED Gold certification for its design of the ranch house headquarters at Brasada Ranch, a golf and outdoor recreation community in Powell Butte, Oregon. The architectural firm designed the 17,000-square-foot structure to include guest suites, a restaurant and the community's administrative offices, and utilized such green strategies as reclaimed wood, native materials, a recycled-content roof and a permeable paving system in the parking area. Denver-based Source Four, Inc., a regional provider of commercial furnishings, was recently named ASID Colorado's Industry Partner of the Year. Source Four's Meredith Gershberg was also recognized for her service to ASID Colorado, including her position on the chapter's board as well as three committees.
ABD Design/Build of Fort Collins, Colorado recently won Second Place in the Home Remodeling category of the Colorado Awards for Remodeling Excellence, sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver. The award-winning project was a century-old home located in Fort Collins' historic district.
Denver's Kimberly Timmons Interiors has been recognized by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver with five awards, four for interior merchandising and one for firm marketing. Additionally, firm principal Kimberly Timmons was inducted into the Art Institute of Colorado's Hall of Fame, which honors the school's alumni. Among the design firm's specialties are model homes, information centers, clubhouses and resorts.

In Business Magazine has honored Danoski Clutts Building Group of Las Vegas with a Nevada Entrepreneur Award. It was one of 12 firms statewide honored for their enterprising, risk-taking, intuitive and self-motivating qualities. The general contracting firm was founded in 2001 by Shawn Danoski and Bryce Clutts. Recent firm projects include a retail development, a warehouse and a church.
In other Danoski Clutts news, Phil Thomas has joined the firm as executive vice president. He has 26 years' experience in construction and development, healthcare and philanthropic sectors.

ABA of Las Vegas, a hospitality design firm, celebrated its 10th anniversary with the release of Places, a coffee-table book that chronicles the firm's recent resort, hotel, restaurant, retail and residential projects with lavish color photography. The firm was founded in 1999 by Todd-Avery Lenahan, president and CEO, and Kimberly Trueba, managing principal.
HKS, with offices in Las Vegas and other cities, recently completed the new Las Vegas venue for the Broadway musical Jersey Boys at the Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino. The 100,000-square-foot theater and lobby project includes seating for 1,700, a 1960s soda shop–style concession area and an entry portal with a custom glass tile mural and light fixture inspired by 1960s-style car taillights.
Scottsdale-based Kendle Design Collaborative recently completed the architectural design and site planning for the renovation of the Camelback Village Racquet and Health Club, a fitness facility in Phoenix. With interior architecture handled by FoRM Design Studio of Phoenix, the renovation includes fitness studios, a day spa, adult lounge and a new lobby and entrance marked by a sweeping roof form.

The architectural firm DLR Group of Phoenix has announced construction of several projects: the new Santa Cruz County Justice and Detention Center in Nogales, Arizona; and, in Sierra Vista, Arizona, a new student union building and an academic building for Cochise College.

KTGY Group, Inc. of Irvine, California has been selected as architect of a workforce housing project in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The project, Villaggio at Route 66, is a 166-unit, mixed-income apartment community with most of the units set aside for those who earn 35 to 60 percent of the area's median income. The Tuscan-inspired, 10.5-acre development will consist of several buildings featuring two- and three-bedroom units, a community building, playgrounds, a pool and fitness center, and other amenities.
Denver's Slaterpaull Architects has completed the $45 million University Center for the Arts at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. The 333,000-square-foot center, which includes the transformation of the 1920s Fort Collins High School, includes five performance venues, two museums, and classrooms and offices designed to preserve and integrate historic elements of the old school.
Domus Studio Architects of San Diego, California has completed the design phase of several church projects. A new 24,000-square-foot school building is in the works for St. Rose of Lima parish in Chula Vista, California, a project designed to be compatible with the city's Gateway office buildings, a redevelopment project located across the street from the parish. In San Clemente, California, the architectural firm has designed a new parish hall for Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, as well as a new church and the expansion and remodeling of the school.
Merzproject of Phoenix has completed a new BSH appliance showroom and training center in Scottsdale. The architectural firm designed a contemporary, 12,000-square-foot facility to showcase the German-based company's products as well as provide seminar space, classrooms and training facilities. Merzproject has also been selected to design a new library for the City of Show Low, Arizona, to be located across the street from the city hall, which was also designed by merzproject.
Archicon, L.C. Architecture and Interiors of Phoenix has announced the completion of several projects, as well as a new commission. The completed projects include the new 7,570-square-foot corporate offices and box office for the Phoenix Symphony, located in a 1913 department store building; the architecture and interior design for the Legacy Inn and Suites Hotel in Gilbert, Arizona, a 64,700-square-foot, multistory hotel; and the remodeling and expansion of the historic Alexis Hotel in Seattle, Washington for Kimpton Hotels. Archicon's newest project is a new Indulge Burger restaurant, to be located in Scottsdale, which will include a sit-down restaurant environment, full bar and a take-out component.
SmithGroup Phoenix has been selected by the City of Chandler, Arizona to design its new city hall facility, a $51 million, 131,000-square-foot complex emphasizing a pedestrian experience. The full-service architectural firm has also been selected to design a mixed-use development for cbdiversified in Glendale, Arizona. The development will feature ground-floor retail and corporate offices.
In other SmithGroup news, the firm has hired David Knight as senior mechanical designer in its Science and Technology Studio, while Juan Lopez has joined the Healthcare Design Studio architectural team.

Landscape architect Angela Dye, FASLA, has been named 61st president of the national ASLA during the organization's 2008 annual meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dye, with more than 25 years' professional experience, is the founder of the Phoenix landscape architecture firm A Dye Design. She is the immediate past trustee of the Arizona Chapter ASLA and has served as national ASLA's vice president of Government Affairs and chair of the Government Affairs Advisory Committee.

Scottsdale architect Vernon Swaback was honored by the National Association of Real Estate Editors with a Silver Award for his book Creating Value: Smart Development and Green Design. Criteria for the award included originality, readability, accuracy, coverage of subject and scholarship. The award was announced during an event in Orlando, Florida. Swaback, an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright, founded Swaback Partners, a full-service architectural firm, in 1978.

CSHQA, an architecture and engineering office headquartered in Boise, Idaho, has opened a Phoenix office. The new office is headed by Jorge A. Pierson, AIA, senior architect and area manager, and Jason R. Martin, project manager.
Kitchens at the Denver, a Denver-based kitchen showroom, recently donated design services and materials for a staff kitchen remodeling at Denver's Center for Work Education and Employment, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income adults find employment.
NYLoft Kitchens & Home Interiors has relocated its representation to the Center of Modern Design in Scottsdale. NYLoft, which emphasizes Italian and European design, is another addition to the Center of Modern Design's offerings, which include Artemide Lighting, Bang & Olufsen, and Scandinavian-designed furnishings and accessories.
