Two Arizona facilities were among eight internationally located libraries that received 2009 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards. The awards, presented by the national AIA and the American Library Association (ALA), recognize library projects by architects licensed in the United States, and were juried by AIA and ALA members. The winning Arizona projects were the Palo Verde Library/Maryvale Community Center in Phoenix, designed by Gould Evans Associates and Wendell Burnette Architects, both of Phoenix; and Arabian Library in Scottsdale, designed by Richard+Bauer Architecture of Phoenix.

The Arizona Governor’s Office and the Arizona School Facilities Board recently honored DLR Group of Phoenix with three Innovative School Design awards. The Phoenix architectural firm received an Accessibility For All Award for its work on the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf, a Safety By Design Award for Faith North Elementary School in Phoenix and an Overall Architectural Design Award for Boulder Creek High School, also in Phoenix. DLR also received Honorable Mention awards for other school projects.

In other DLR Group news, mechanical engineer Gary A. Nelson, P.E., LEED-AP, has earned a High-Performance Building Design Professional certification from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Nelson is the first engineer to receive the certification within DLR Group, which, in addition to the Phoenix locale, has 14 offices nationwide.

The design of Eddie V’s Seafood Grill in Fort Worth, Texas has been lauded as having a “Rat Packy, Mid-Century vibe that projects an aura of cool sophistication” in D Magazine of Dallas, as wells as receiving other positive reviews for the interior by Texas-based restaurant-review blogs. The restaurant, as well as other Eddie V’s locations, were designed by DPA Architects, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona.

DFDia Interior Architecture of Tempe, Arizona has earned LEED Certification for the office space of Davis Architecture, its sister firm, also located in Tempe. The project marked the first time DFDia managed the Leed Certification process in-house, led by managing director Nicola Possas, LEED-AP, and senior designer Amy Dooley, LEED-AP.

Aspen, Colorado’s Z-Group Architects has completed the Snowmass Village Town Hall. The 24,000-square-foot facility houses the Colorado town’s government offices, council chambers, police department and public meeting rooms. The design, which embodies a contemporary interpretation of its Rocky Mountain site and ski resort setting, includes sustainable building materials and mechanical systems.

FM Group, Inc., a Scottsdale architectural, interiors, facility asset management and environmental firm, has completed the design of the Engrained Cafe in the Memorial Union Building at Arizona State University in Tempe. The restaurant, part of Aramark’s food services for the university, features a concept that emphasizes sustainability, from the design and construction to the food served. The design includes a center island around a hearth pizza oven where customers can dine and watch meals being prepared. The project, which replaced a fire-damaged food facility, included the use of low-VOC finishes, recycled-content materials, PEFC-certified woods and energy-efficient lighting and appliances.
In other FM Group Inc. news, the firm recently completed design for the Marketplace at Fulton Ranch in Chandler, Arizona for Champion Partners LLC. The mixed-use project includes retail, restaurant and office space.

Boise, Idaho-based CSHQA, an architectural and engineering firm, has completed the new terminal building of the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport in Medford, Oregon. The $44 million facility includes an airside apron, state-of-the-art water treatment, landside access roadways and parking areas. Phased construction of the 110,000-square-foot terminal building allowed existing facilities to remain open during the project. The terminal itself features sustainable elements, such as daylighting with dimmable switching, low-flow plumbing fixtures and energy-recovery ventilation.

Artistic Designs LLC of Scottsdale has completed the first phase of renovation work on Barcelona Restaurant and Nightclub, also in Scottsdale. The design firm, founded by Marilizabeth, ASID, who goes by one name, updated the popular nightspot’s previous Old World ambiance with the addition of private cabana-style seating for both dining and bottle service, as well as a new VIP area and patio.

Graham Downes Architecture, which has offices in Las Vegas and San Diego, has completed work on Nico’s Steak and Chop House in Chula Vista, California and has started designs for the renovation of the Bali Hai restaurant located on San Diego’s Shelter Island. The Nico’s project is a new, $3.5 million, 6,500-square-foot building that seats 250 and features a contemporary, indoor-outdoor ambiance. The Bali Hai, a Tiki-style restaurant that dates to 1953, will be modernized to reflect a South Pacific Islands concept and will include the addition of a freestanding function pavilion.

Design Significance Architecture of Reno, Nevada, a firm founded by architect Michael Trible, has completed work on Goldfinger Gentlemen’s Club, a Reno nightclub. Trible transformed what was once an auto-body shop into a two-level, 10,000-square foot club, marked by exterior fin walls and a new entry canopy, and an interior that includes several bars, stages for dancers, private areas and a full-service kitchen.

SmithGroup of Phoenix has begun design on the renovation of Paradise Valley Community College’s “Q” building at the school’s campus in Phoenix. The existing facility currently houses a county library and an equine center. The 48,000-square-foot renovation will support the college’s math department, general instruction classrooms and a learning center. Construction manager at risk for the estimated $9 million project is Jokake Construction of Phoenix.

In other SmithGroup news, the firm has been contracted to provide architecture and engineering for the Mesa Community College Nursing and Exercise Science renovation and addition project. The existing 1960s building, located on the school’s Mesa, Arizona campus, will be remodeled and expanded by approximately 11,000 square feet.

AssemblageStudio of Las Vegas has begun work on a pilot project for the City of Henderson, Nevada to create an affordable, 243-unit senior housing complex, designed to be a transition living space for seniors who can no longer afford single-family living but are not ready for assisted-living facilities. The housing project, which will be developed with sustainable strategies and materials, is a collaboration between the architectural firm, Henderson’s planning department and Nevada State Senator Michael Schneider.

Architectural Alliance, Inc. of Phoenix has completed work on the interiors for a blood and plasma donor center for United Blood Services in Goodyear, Arizona. The 3,000-square-foot center emphasizes a patient-friendly design of soft colors, restful lighting and comfortable, modern furniture. Project manager was firm principal Oscar de las Salas and general contractor was Hardison Downey Construction of Phoenix.

Scottsdale’s Art 2 U, an art consulting company founded by Jude Smith, is nearing completion of an art installation at the Phoenix Country Club, part of an extensive remodeling of the country club, which dates to 1901. Artwork selected emphasizes the club’s history. Art 2 U has also received a commission to handle the artwork for the remodeling of the Moon Valley Country Club, also in Phoenix.

Danoski Clutts Building Group of Las Vegas has completed work on two projects in the city, the Desert Marketplace, a $5 million complex, anchored by PetCo and other retailers, and Jesus Is Lord Church, a 9,000-square-foot project that includes a large sanctuary, three multi-purpose rooms, offices, a bookstore and kitchen.

In other Danoski Clutts news, the firm recently hired Garrett Baughn as an estimator and Fred Kuglin as a project manager.

Tania Salgado, AIA, a design principal with RNL Denver, has received a 2009 national AIA Young Architects Award. Salgado, who has worked on several notable and award-winning RNL projects in Colorado, has also been the recipient of the Young Architect of the Year awards from both AIA Denver and AIA Western Mountain Region. She was one of eight young architects from around the country recognized by national AIA for their exceptional leadership and significant contributions to the profession early in their careers.

Two Arizona architects have been elevated to the AIA College of Fellows. Frank Mascia, FAIA, principal of CDG Architects in Tucson, is an expert in the area of architectural practice management and technology. Thomas J. Posedly, FAIA, of Phoenix, began his architectural career in the 1960s and is also an activist for the deaf community.

Kim Ciesynski, principal of Spaces Design & Planning in Reno, has been named to the Washington, D.C.-based National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Board of Directors. Ciesynski, a graduate of the University of Nevada-Reno and an NCIDQ certificate holder, specializes in hospitality, healthcare and residential work.

Rita Peterson, ASID, CAPS, and Bob Peterson, CGR, CAPS, co-owners of Associates in Building & Design, Ltd. of Fort Collins, Colorado attended the 2008 International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, where Rita Peterson was elected to the Board of Trustees of the NAHB 20 Club Program and Bob Peterson was installed as second vice chair for the National Home Builders Remodelers Council.

The Arizona Chapter of the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) has elected a new president and board members. Dede Radford of Dunn-Edwards was elected president. Board members include Sharon Woodward, Lisa Gildar, Cindy Lewton, Debbie Conforti, Karen Sugarman, Dana George, Karen Egan, Paula Schulman, Jan Herwick, Joe Jefferson and Nancy Hugo.

The California Central/Nevada Chapter ASID has opened an office in the Las Vegas Design Center. The 1,149-square-office is located on the first floor of Building A, and will be the site of the Design Salon program, in which ASID student members fulfill their internship requirements as well as allowing local designers the ability to start business relationships with new clientele. The Design Salon program was developed by Randy Wells, Las Vegas Design center vice president, and Bobbie Jo Kinsey, ASID, chapter president-elect.

Chandler, Arizona interior designer Debra May Himes, ASID, IIDA has received her LEED-AP accreditation. Himes, whose practice focuses on both commercial and residential design, is also known for her Jonathan David national furniture line and her award-winning product design of the “Jewels” window hardware line for Chandler-based Helser Brothers.

Nadel Architects has appointed Greg Lyon as design principal to oversee the firm’s offices in Las Vegas and Phoenix, as well as California offices in Sacramento, San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. Lyon, who was most recently with KTGY Group in Irvine, California, will be based out of Nadel’s Los Angeles office.

Circle West Architects of Scottsdale has promoted Dudley Campbell, AIA, as principal and Moazam Khan as associate. The firm, founded by Peter M. Koliopoulos, AIA, handles both commercial and residential projects.

Slaterpaull Architects of Denver recently completed its third annual Green Challenge, a firm-wide commitment to sustainability. This year’s goal was working with the AIA’s Committee on the Environment to take the Green Challenge nationwide. In addition, the challenge encourages firm employees to make at least one significant change to reduce their personal carbon footprint.

Studio F1 of Phoenix, a firm that specializes in accelerated architectural rendering and animation services to architecture, construction and development clients, recently donated time and services to benefit the Sojourner Center, a Phoenix domestic violence shelter. The firm provided graphic pieces, e-vites and Web site design for a fundraising event for the shelter.

Kornegay Design of Phoenix, manufacturers of cast-concrete site furniture and containers, has had its Masaru series of landscape containers named one of Architectural Record’s noteworthy building products of the year. The four container styles range in size from 30 to 60 inches and are scored with subtle horizontal bands. Architectural Record, the official publication of AIA, annually recognizes new products with a juried selection.

Thomas & Company, a trade-only furnishings showroom, has relocated to new quarters in the Arizona Design Center in Scottsdale. The new locale provides the showroom with more space in which to display furniture, accessories and lighting.

Fenwicks Fine Rugs of Scottsdale has moved into the Touch of History showroom, also in Scottsdale. The rug firm specializes in Oriental rugs from Pakistan, China, Iran, India, Tibet and other locales. Touch of History offers furnishings as well as interior design, architectural, developer and vacation home consultation services.

Kitchens Southwest of Scottsdale has become the Arizona dealer of St. Charles Cabinetry. The cabinetry line, a division of Viking Range Corporation, is available in brushed stainless steel and 23 colors of powdercoated cold-rolled steel.

It’s nap time at Center of Modern Design in Scottsdale. The showroom, which represents lines such as Hastens, Artemide, Bang & Olufsen and Fritz Hansen, recently developed a nap room outfitted with Bang & Olufsen home electronics where clients can test a showroom bed. At the customer’s request, any bed in the showroom can be taken from the display floor into the special room within minutes.
