Southwest Chapter IIDA Design Awards

From a small-town Arizona library to an office done on a budget, P.R.I.D.E.-award winners epitomize the best of desert interiors.

In May, more than 250 members of the Southwest Chapter IIDA and guests gathered at Arizona’s Tempe Center for the Arts for an evening of cocktails, networking and honoring design achievements with the presentation of the 2009 Professional Recognition in Interior Design Excellence (P.R.I.D.E.) awards.

In all, 29 awards were given to Arizona and Nevada firms for projects in commercial, residential, healthcare, education, public facility, retail, hospitality and restaurant, environmental and budget-design categories.

Here are some of the winners of the Design Excellence Award–the competition’s highest honor.

Public Facility

Avondale Old Town Library

SmithGroup, Phoenix
Team Members: Eddie Curiel, LEED AP; Kent Willcox, AIA, LEED AP;
and Mark Roddy, AIA, LEED AP

The 12,500-square-foot library, which also received the competition’s “Best of Show” designation, was designed as a replacement library for this small Arizona town outside Phoenix. The airy structure includes a lobby, cafe and children’s reading room at street level, with teen and adult sections on the second floor. The extensive use of window walls serves to signal its colorful interior and activities to passersby.

Commercial Office Under 10,000 Square Feet

The Ellman Companies at Westgate

Evolution Design, Tempe, Arizona
Team Members: Roberta Thomas, IIDA; and Vanessa Gerasoli

The Glendale, Arizona offices for this high-profile developer were designed to house the sales and construction staff for a new mixed-use project, as well as to incorporate a very large-scale model of the property, along with capability for display and signage. The model was displayed prominently in the lobby, along with custom shadow boxes for project photos. Exposed ceilings with suspended metal grilles house the lighting to accent the model below. Other materials include ebony wood flooring, simple white walls and custom metal work.

Commercial Single Space

Portland Place Lobby

DFDia, Tempe, Arizona
Team Members: Richard Drinkwater, AIA, LEED AP;
and Amy Dooley, IIDA, LEED AP

A luxury condominium project in downtown Phoenix called for a lobby designed to set the elegant, contemporary and high-end tone for these urban residences. Taking their cue from an adjacent Japanese friendship garden, the design team created a tranquil, minimalist entrance to the building, highlighted by the use of shoji-like screens. Materials include wood, in the forms of a Japanese ash soffit and curved ceiling elements, stone flooring and steel, while simple black leather seating invites visitors and residents alike to sit a spell. The 1,200-square-foot lobby also includes a conference room available to residents.

Hospitality and Restaurant

The Spa at Camelback Village Racquet and Health Club

FoRM Design Studio, Ltd., Phoenix
Team Members: Jose Martinez, IIDA, AIA Associate; Marcene Kandra, ASID, LEED AP; Brent Kleinman and Enza Accardi

The Phoenix sports club underwent a major transformation in 2008, renovating existing facilities and expanding into what was once a next-door restaurant. The spa serves as a link between the two structures, and contains reception and retail space, five treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge and locker rooms, all done in a stylish modern motif with natural hues of citrus, leafy greens and charcoal. The design of the club itself also won FoRM an Award of Merit in the category of Public Facility.

Education

Taylor Place, Arizona State University

SmithGroup, Phoenix
Team Members: Kai Ekbundit, IIDA; Mark Kranz, AIA, LEED AP; Carrie Perrone, AIA, LEED AP; Eddie Garcia, AIA, LEED AP; Katie Terwelp, AIA; and Brady Rewerts, AIA

Two 13-story towers provide housing for students attending Arizona State University’s downtown campus as well as a street-level dining hall and retail space, all of which have access to a newly developed urban plaza and mall. The interiors are marked by terrazzo flooring, raw, natural materials, natural daylighting, vivid colors and, by night, an energetic lighting scheme.

Environmental Design

Salt River Project Call Center

Gensler, Phoenix
Team Members: Beth Harmon-Vaughan, Chuck Albright, Markus Hering, Julie Hutchinson and Jeffery Maas

The 60,000-square-foot call center in Queen Creek, Arizona for the Phoenix-area utility company was envisioned as a self-contained community that includes a training and business center, emergency command post, cafe/lounge, locker rooms and building support spaces. Slated for LEED Gold Certification, the building includes natural daylighting, rooms that open on to exterior courtyards and underfloor distribution of HVAC, electrical and wiring.

Creativity on a Budget

RNL Phoenix Design Studio

RNL, Phoenix
Team Members: Stacey Kranz, IIDA; Courtney Armstrong, Sabrina Russo, Carl Price and Craig Randock

Working with a $32 per square foot tenant-improvement budget, the design team was able to utilize an existing masonry shell with exposed wood structure as the backdrop for the architectural firm’s own 8,000-square-foot offices. The project made use of natural material finishes such as bamboo, splashes of color and eight-foot-wide rolling doors that allow conference rooms to spill out into the lobby for spatial enlargement. Additionally, new skylights, recycled denim insulation and the re-use of existing building components allowed the project to go for LEED CI Certification.

On the Boards

Mesa Community College Saguaro Building at Red Mountain

SmithGroup, Phoenix
Team Members: Lori James, IIDA; Mark Kranz, AIA, LEED AP; Ben McRae, AIA; and Brad Woodman, AIA.

The proposed, 37,000-square-foot building for a campus of the Mesa, Arizona community college will meld seemingly disparate courses of study--science and performing arts--by including performing arts classrooms and a blackbox theater, as well as terrariums, bat roosts and a snake-wrangling area. The terrariums will be a focal point for the lobby, which doubles as the campus student union and is designed to open to an outdoor performance space and dining area.
