The design of the Ronald McDonald House in Tucson was all about creating a comfortable, cheerful residential setting for the families of critically ill children. The three interior designers worked together on the 23,000-square-foot project to keep the tight budget in line, even finding corporate and local support to help complete the facility. Highlights of the project include the specification of low-VOC paints and anti-microbial flooring to accommodate children with compromised immune systems, as well as the use of vibrant colors, a suspended cloud-shaped ceiling in the dining room, and the display of artwork donated by more than 50 local artists. |
Second Place, Commercial Space Over 3,500 Square Feet
Sierra Tucson Treatment Center
Christy Martin, Allied Member ASID
Studio Encanto, Tucson

This private facility for mental wellness promotes healing and strengthening of family ties, and as such, its interior needed to provide a calming, welcoming setting. The designer chose a nostalgic, regional ambiance for the 26,000-square-foot treatment center, which includes public spaces and 20 patient rooms. Materials include wood floors, granite countertops, tile, painted cabinetry and Spanish Colonial-style furnishings.

Aesthetics Interiors, Inc., Oro Valley

A dated, 33-unit apartment complex was transformed into a fresh, Southwestern-influenced resort community. The designers chose new finishes and backgrounds, hacienda-style furnishings, lighting and artwork for each unit. They also removed an old indoor pool to create space for a new activities center, which includes offices, a gym, changing rooms, breakfast lounge and conference center.

The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain
Lori Carroll, ASID
Lori Carroll & Associates, Tucson

When this globally recognized hospitality corporation launched a residential development in Tucson, the firm needed a sales center that reflected its brand and attracted clients to the new venue. The designer responded with well-appointed displays and conference areas designed in a gallery style, highlighting natural materials, sandy, neutral hues and specialty lighting that give potential homebuyers ideas about creating their own desert-appropriate interiors.

The Cake Boutique

Whimsy and luscious colors mark the style of a specialty bakery, designed to look like the inside of a cake. Against a backdrop of espresso-stained cabinetry and pearlescent milk-chocolate-hued walls, the designer defined the space with white crown moulding, antique silver etageres for display, raspberry upholstery fabrics and illumination that includes halogen lighting and a chandelier. |
Third Place, Commercial Space Under 3,500 Square Feet
Bistro 44
Terri Taylor, ASID
Taylor Design Group, Tucson
| The designer transformed a boxy, bland space into an appealing neighborhood restaurant and bar with the use of a warm color palette that includes deep red, pale yellow, brown and black tones, rich textures and specialty lighting. The design features banco seating, with tables and chairs going down the center of the restaurant, creating an intimate dining area. The space is divided with the use of architectural grills and textured resin panels, and ambient noise is dulled via fabric-covered sound boards. Custom copper art provides the final fillip. |
