An Abundance of Great Design
ASID Colorado 2009 Design Award Winners
The economy may figure in everything these days, but in Colorado, design professionals have nonetheless been busy creating remarkable interiors. Those interiors have been recognized by ASID Colorado during the organization’s eleventh annual interior design awards program, held earlier this year at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Denver.
More than 170 industry professionals submitted projects for the competition, judged by members of the ASID St. Louis East chapter. The jurors gave out 26 First-Place awards for commercial and residential categories. Additionally, two of those projects were recognized by the jurors as outstanding, Judge’s Award for Merit winners.
Here are the Merit winners and some of the First Place-winning projects.

Clear Creek Endodontics
Arvada, Colorado
Lynne Thom, AIA
Lynn Thom Architects
Denver, Colorado

When the client expressed an interest in referencing the nearby creek in the design of this dental office, architect Lynne Thom responded with natural materials such as travertine, quartz and birch-embedded resin panels; curvilinear forms and riverside hues of blue, sand, leaf green and brown. An indoor water feature adds another calming riparian reference.

Blake Mourer
Gensler
Denver, Colorado

As part of one of the world’s largest media conglomerates, the local client wanted to blend four distinct creative agencies into one commonly shared space that would both appeal to each unique agency and convey the transparent whole of the parent company. A neutral background of black and white links the spaces, with each agency identified through the use of a signature color, finishes and architectural elements. The design additionally captures each agency’s essence with logo shapes, client references and mission statements, as well as finishes, patterns and textures that reference media content such as pixels and half-tone screens.

Vacation Residence
Rikke Jorgensen, ASID
Styleworks, LLC
Denver, Colorado

A professional writer and sports fan wanted a two-bedroom urban retreat for writing and entertaining--in a very short period of time. Rikke Jorgensen responded with a design that incorporates modern, sleek furnishings and a color scheme of red, brown and gold hues. Contemporary chandeliers add drama to the public spaces and reiterate the sparkle of city lights seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows. More serene colors and forms were used in the bedrooms.
First Place Primary Residence Under 5,000 Square Feet
Scott Jordan, Allied Member ASID
Jordan Design Studio, Ltd.
Denver, Colorado

An unconventional building envelope, the desire for a flexible furniture layout to accommodate entertaining and meshing the clients’ eclectic tastes with a contemporary architectural setting were some of the challenges that Scott Jordan faced in designing this urban home. Jordan responded with a layout that addresses both entertaining and views, as well as privacy and lighting issues. Using neutral hues and subtle patterns and textures in fabrics and area rugs, Jordan also added substance, scale and interest to structural columns with the application of woven sisal.
First Place Primary Residence Over 5,000 Square Feet
Kate Ohle, Allied Member ASID
Harvey M. Hine Interiors
Boulder, Colorado

A penthouse with an open floorplan and generous window walls allows the homeowners plenty of room for entertaining and uninterrupted views of nearby mountains.
