nora trulssonWelcome

Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the Greenbuild 2009 conference and expo in Phoenix, a wonderful experience full of new product intros, lectures, tours, meeting new people from all over the world, catching up with old friends and plenty of “aha” moments. It was a huge event, with thousands of attendees, thousands of exhibitors. My personal favorite event? A lecture in which I learned details of how large hotel chains are greening up their business practices as well as their buildings.

By the end of each day, my feet hurt and my head spun from too much information...but it was totally worth it. I highly recommend it. Greenbuild is the epicenter of the green building revolution. The next one is in Chicago, so bring a warm jacket.

What could be more green than remodeling or expanding an existing building? No teardowns or furthering urban sprawl with these approaches. In this issue, we’re taking a look at a 1970s home that has blossomed with a modern addition as well as a beloved arts center that’s just raised the curtain on a multi-million-dollar updating. Check out both projects’ respective “before” shots below. We’re also touring a new library in Scottsdale, Arizona that combines an airy design with LEED certification points so it treads lightly on its desert site. Additionally, we’re spotlighting recent award-winning work from members of AIA New Mexico, projects ranging from a fire station in New Mexico to an arts center in Illinois.

Of special note in this issue is a business and design outlook for 2010, courtesy of the members of our Editorial Advisory Board. Naomi Anderson, Leanna Hoff Boers, Larry Lake, Gretchen L. Palmer, Erik Peterson, Eric Strain and Randy Wells represent different sectors of the design/build industry, and they thoughtfully answered a series of questions meant to shed light on everything from marketing trends to design collaboration. Their answers? Realistic, but positive.

Looking for ways to add spark to a current project? Check out this issue’s story on paint color trends and new paint products.

Finally, you may have noticed something different about this issue’s cover. In honor of our 15th year of publishing, we’re returning to our original cover design. We hope you enjoy the change.
