nora trulssonWelcome

ASLA has declared April National Landscape Architecture Month, and here at Sources+Design, we’re doing our part by bringing you an issue devoted largely to the outdoor built environment.

With a whiff of spring in the air, we’re touring two national ASLA award-winning projects, one a private residence in Wyoming, the other a university complex in Arizona. Though seemingly at opposite ends of the design spectrum, they’re linked by a similar accomplishment--each landscape design betters the site and, in its own way, heals the land. We’re also taking a look at the recent winners of Arizona ASLA’s design competition. Who knew that a park-and-ride facility or a display for specimen succulents could be so fabulous? Then, come outside with us through our Market Watch section, where we’re previewing furnishings and products that make outdoor dining so appealing.

Looking ahead, May is turning out to be a busy month. We are once again participating in the Rocky Mountain Designers’ Market at the Denver Design District, two days’ worth of seminars, speakers, exhibitors and special events at the collection of trade showrooms in downtown Denver. I’ll be participating in a portfolio event at the Hoff Miller showroom, something I look forward to each year. Dates are May 12 and 13; check for details at www.denverdesign.com.

Additionally, Sources+Design is co-sponsoring “Green Design: From The Ground Up” on May 12 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in Scottsdale, Arizona, presented by IFDA’s Arizona Chapter. Speakers include architect Vern Swaback, FAIA; Anthony Floyd, AIA, of the City of Scottsdale’s Green Building Program; and Amy Stephens of USGBC Arizona Central Chapter. Check www.ifdaaz.com for specifics
.
Finally, some friends of Sources+Design (FOSD, perhaps?) have some news to share. Architect Douglas Sydnor, AIA, part of the creative team that brought you last issue’s “Project Walk-Through,” the Appaloosa Branch Library, has produced yet another project–this time, a book. His Scottsdale Architecture, just put out by Arcadia Publishing, features historic images and information about the city’s notable buildings, such as the 1949 Upton residence, designed by Paul Schweikher, FAIA, and photographed by the legendary Julius Shulman; as well as the 1892 Titus house, which still stands today. (And you thought Scottsdale’s architecture didn’t predate 1980.) To get the book, visit www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Another “FOSD,” Spark Modern Fires, would like you to know that the company is looking for submissions for its second annual design competition, Site Specific 2, and asking design professionals to submit images and descriptions of projects that feature Spark Modern Fires products. Deadline is April 15; for more information, visit www.sparkfires.com.
